Scope for growth
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010589
The difference between the energy assimilated by an organism from its food and the energy expended for its metabolic maintenance, representing the energy available for growth and reproduction. This metric is used in ecotoxicology to assess the physiological stress experienced by organisms exposed to environmental contaminants. A reduced scope for growth indicates impaired health and reproductive capacity.
