Sepsis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010756
A life-threatening organ dysfunction resulting from a dysregulated host response to an infection. The body's overwhelming and uncontrolled immune reaction to the infection causes widespread inflammation, leading to tissue damage, organ failure, and shock. Sepsis is diagnosed based on clinical criteria that include evidence of infection and signs of acute organ dysfunction, such as altered mental status or a rapid respiratory rate.
