Sexually dimorphic nucleus

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010793

A distinct cluster of cells located in the preoptic area of the hypothalamus that shows a marked size difference between males and females in many mammalian species, including humans. In males, this nucleus is significantly larger and contains more neurons than in females, a difference that arises due to the influence of perinatal sex hormones. The size of this nucleus is correlated with aspects of male sexual behavior, although its precise function in humans is not fully established.
