Soporific

A substance that causes or induces a state of drowsiness or sleep. These agents act on the central nervous system to decrease alertness and promote the onset of sleep, making them a class of hypnotic drugs. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are two classes of drugs that possess soporific properties.
