Barbiturates
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012913
A class of drugs that are derivatives of barbituric acid, a cyclic compound formed from urea and malonic acid. They act as central nervous system depressants, producing effects from mild sedation to total anesthesia. Barbiturates are classified by their duration of action, with examples including the long-acting phenobarbital and the ultra-short-acting thiopental.
