Sperm motility

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011175

The ability of spermatozoa to move under their own power, with progressive motility meaning travel forward in a line or large circles, which a sperm needs to reach and penetrate the egg. It is assessed by microscopic examination of fresh semen, scoring the percentage of sperm that are progressive, non-progressive, or immotile. The WHO lower reference limit for progressive motility is 32% in the fifth edition manual and 30% in the sixth.
