Spin-spin relaxation time
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011226
The time constant T2 for the decay of transverse magnetization in nuclear magnetic resonance, caused by fluctuating local fields from neighbouring spins that make the spins lose phase coherence. Static field inhomogeneity adds a further apparent decay described by T2-star, which a spin echo refocuses. T2 is less than or equal to the spin-lattice relaxation time T1, and the two are equal for small molecules in fluid solution.
