Inversion pulse

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006060

A radiofrequency pulse in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy that rotates the bulk magnetization vector by 180 degrees around an axis in the transverse plane. This pulse inverts the populations of the spin states, moving magnetization from the +z axis to the -z axis. Inversion pulses are used in pulse sequences such as inversion recovery to measure spin-lattice (T1) relaxation times and in spin echo sequences to refocus chemical shifts.
