Spiro chain
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011229
A double-strand polymer chain made of a continuous series of rings in which each pair of neighbouring rings shares exactly one atom, the spiro atom. The tetrahedral spiro atom sets neighbouring rings roughly perpendicular to one another, so the chain is rigid but twisted rather than a flat ladder or a straight rod. Adjacent units are joined through three atoms, whereas a ladder chain joins them through four.
