Spiro macromolecule
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011231
A double-strand macromolecule made of a continuous series of rings in which each pair of adjacent rings has just one atom in common, the spiro atom. A macromolecule that merely contains an isolated spiro atom does not qualify. Because the spiro atom is tetrahedral, successive rings lie in roughly perpendicular planes, which gives a rigid, twisted backbone.
