Stochastic theories

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011427

Approaches in chemical kinetics that describe the time evolution of a chemically reacting system as a probabilistic process. These theories account for the discrete nature of molecular populations and the random character of individual reactive events, making them suitable for systems with small numbers of molecules where fluctuations are prominent. The master equation formalism is a common mathematical framework for these theories, contrasting with deterministic rate laws that describe average concentrations.
