Summation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011582

The adding together of separate postsynaptic potentials produced by inputs that arrive close together in time or at nearby sites on a neuron, so that the sum reaches the threshold for firing an impulse even though no single input does. Spatial summation combines inputs from different synapses at the same moment, while temporal summation combines rapid repeated inputs at one synapse. Inhibitory potentials add in the same way, and a sum of excitatory and inhibitory potentials can cancel out.
