Supercritical fluid extraction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011597
An extraction process that uses a supercritical fluid as the extraction solvent to separate one component from another. The substance is heated and pressurized above its critical point, where it exhibits properties of both a liquid and a gas, allowing it to diffuse through solids like a gas and dissolve materials like a liquid. Carbon dioxide is a widely used solvent for this technique because its critical point (31.1 °C and 73.8 bar) is easily accessible.
