Surface-average particle diameter

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011672

A statistical measure of particle size in a dispersed system, calculated as the diameter of a sphere having the same surface area to volume ratio as the average particle. This average is particularly relevant for phenomena dependent on surface area, such as adsorption or catalytic activity. It is often determined from techniques like gas adsorption or light scattering.
