Volume-average particle diameter

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012622

The mean particle diameter obtained by averaging the cubes of the diameters over all particles, weighted by number, and taking the cube root, which equals the diameter of a sphere with the mean particle volume. It is weighted toward the larger particles of a dispersion because the diameter enters cubed. Electron microscopy counts and laser diffraction can supply the data.
