Syrup
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011773
A concentrated or nearly saturated aqueous solution of a sugar, most commonly sucrose, used as a liquid vehicle for medicinal substances. Syrups serve to mask the unpleasant taste of active pharmaceutical ingredients and can also act as preservatives due to their high osmotic pressure. A preparation designated as 'Syrup' in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) contains 85% w/v sucrose, which corresponds to a concentration of 850 grams per liter.
