Tautomer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011829

  1. Isomers of a compound that readily interconvert by the migration of a hydrogen atom and a concomitant shift of a double bond. This dynamic equilibrium between two or more structural isomers is known as tautomerism. Keto-enol tautomerism is a common example, where a ketone or aldehyde is in equilibrium with its enol form.

  2. Structural isomers of a compound that are in dynamic equilibrium and interconvert rapidly through the migration of an atom or group, typically a hydrogen atom, and the rearrangement of pi bonds. These isomers differ in the position of atoms and electrons but are readily interconverted under typical conditions. Keto-enol pairs are classic examples of tautomers.
