Tertiary structure

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011887

The three-dimensional arrangement of all atoms in a polypeptide chain, resulting from the folding of the secondary structure elements. This intricate folding is stabilized by interactions between amino acid side chains, including hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonds, disulfide bridges, and ionic bonds. The tertiary structure determines the protein's overall shape and biological function.
