Protein folding
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013445
The physical process by which a polypeptide chain acquires its native, three-dimensional structure, a conformation that is biologically functional. This complex process involves the polypeptide chain folding into a specific, stable arrangement driven by hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonds, and other forces. Misfolding of proteins is associated with a number of diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and cystic fibrosis.
