Transient phase
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012225
The period at the start of a reaction, before a steady state is reached, while a reactive intermediate accumulates, its concentration climbing from zero to the steady-state value. Rate expressions based on the steady-state approximation do not apply until this period has ended, and the overall stoichiometric equation can fail to describe the changes in amount while it lasts.
