Transition structure
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012241
A specific arrangement of atoms at the saddle point on a potential energy surface, representing the highest energy point along the reaction coordinate between reactants and products. It is an unstable configuration through which a chemical system must pass during a reaction. The transition structure has a lifetime on the order of femtoseconds and cannot be directly observed.
