Unsaturation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012454

The presence of multiple bonds, double or triple, between carbon atoms or between carbon and atoms such as nitrogen or oxygen, which lets a molecule undergo addition reactions across the bond. The degree of unsaturation is quantified by the hydrogen deficiency index, the number of rings plus pi bonds. In solution chemistry the word also names the state of an unsaturated solution, which holds less solute than one in equilibrium with undissolved solute.
