V centres
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012482
A type of colour centre in an alkali halide crystal consisting of a hole trapped at a cation vacancy. These defects are created when the crystal is exposed to ionizing radiation, which removes an electron from a halide ion, creating a hole. The hole can then become localized at a site where a positive ion is missing from the crystal lattice, forming a stable V centre that absorbs light at specific wavelengths.
