Zero filling

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012798

A processing step in Fourier transform spectroscopy in which zeros are appended to a free induction decay or interferogram before the transform, which decreases the frequency or wavenumber spacing between points of the spectrum. It interpolates the spectrum and gives smoother, better-defined line shapes without adding information or improving true resolution. Padding to twice the original data length is a common choice.
