An optical system, such as a compound lens or mirror assembly, corrected for both spherical aberration and coma for a specific object point. This correction means that rays from an off-axis point converge to a single image point without the comet-shaped blur characteristic of coma. Aplanatic systems must satisfy the Abbe sine condition, which relates the sines of the angles of the input and output rays to the system's magnification.
