The deviation between a measured, transmitted, or calculated value and its true, specified, or theoretically correct value. In digital systems, this discrepancy can result from noise, hardware faults, or software defects, leading to incorrect data or system behavior. Error detection and correction codes, such as parity checks or Hamming codes, are used to identify and fix these deviations in data transmission and storage.
