Fettle
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002239
To remove unwanted seams, ridges, or imperfections from a piece of ceramic ware before firing. This process is performed on greenware (unfired clay bodies) using specialized tools like fettling knives, sponges, and scrapers to smooth surfaces and refine the object's final shape. Proper fettling cleans the piece without altering its intended form or weakening its structure, and it occurs after casting or molding but before the initial bisque firing.
