MOV
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003777
A voltage-dependent resistor used to protect electronic circuits from excessive transient voltages. The Metal-Oxide Varistor (MOV) exhibits high resistance at low voltages but rapidly drops to a low resistance when the voltage exceeds its rated clamping voltage, shunting the surge current away from the protected components. MOVs are rated by their clamping voltage, maximum current, and energy absorption capacity in joules.
