Contributory infringement

The act of knowingly inducing, causing, or materially contributing to the infringing conduct of another party, without directly committing the infringement oneself. This form of secondary liability applies in intellectual property law, such as copyright and patent cases. To establish contributory infringement, the plaintiff must prove that the defendant had knowledge of the direct infringement and materially assisted it.
