Last clear chance

A doctrine in tort law, particularly in jurisdictions applying contributory negligence, that allows a plaintiff to recover damages despite their own negligence. It applies when the defendant had the final opportunity to avoid the accident but failed to do so, even if the plaintiff was initially negligent. This doctrine serves as an exception to the strict bar on recovery imposed by contributory negligence.
