Miranda warning

A statement read by law enforcement officers to a person in custody, informing them of their constitutional rights before any questioning. These rights include the right to remain silent, that anything said can be used against them in court, the right to an attorney, and the right to have an attorney appointed if they cannot afford one. Failure to issue these warnings before interrogation can lead to the exclusion of any subsequent statements as evidence.
