Absorption hygrometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003203

A hygrometer that infers the water vapor content of air from absorption, either by the uptake of vapor into a hygroscopic medium, as in the chemical type where a desiccant takes up moisture from a measured volume of air and is weighed, or by the absorption of ultraviolet or infrared radiation by the vapor along a short optical path. The optical types, such as the Lyman-alpha hygrometer, respond quickly enough to follow rapid humidity fluctuations in turbulence studies.
