Atmospheric tide

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003690

Global-scale oscillations in atmospheric pressure, temperature, and wind that are primarily driven by solar heating and, to a lesser extent, lunar gravitational forces. These periodic variations propagate vertically and horizontally through the atmosphere, with the diurnal and semi-diurnal cycles being the most prominent. Solar thermal tides are strongest in the upper atmosphere, while lunar tides are much weaker and more difficult to detect.
