Basis functions
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003852
A set of linearly independent functions used to construct other functions within a given function space, often employed in numerical methods for solving differential equations. In atmospheric and oceanic modeling, they are used to represent spatial variations of meteorological variables, such as temperature or wind, in spectral models. Examples include spherical harmonics for global atmospheric models.
