Spherical harmonic
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009130
A class of mathematical functions used to represent a function defined over the surface of a sphere, analogous to how Fourier series represent functions on a circle. They are solutions to Laplace's equation in spherical coordinates and are widely used in numerical weather prediction models to represent atmospheric fields. Each spherical harmonic is identified by two integers, the degree and the order, which determine its spatial scale.
