Spherical harmonic
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003538
A set of mathematical functions used to represent a field or property distributed over the surface of a sphere. These functions form an orthogonal basis, allowing complex spherical patterns to be decomposed into a series of simpler components of increasing spatial frequency. In geophysics, they are applied to model Earth's gravitational and magnetic fields, providing a way to describe large-scale variations and anomalies.
