Spherical focusing
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003537
A method in electrode resistivity logging in which the current electrodes are driven so that the measuring current spreads into the formation along spherical equipotential surfaces, which keeps the reading on a roughly spherical region around the tool and reduces the effect of the borehole and adjacent beds. It is the principle of the spherically focused log, SFL, a shallow device run with dual induction tools. Unlike induction, it passes current through electrodes in contact with the mud, so it needs a conductive mud.
