Orthogonal functions

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007748

A set of functions where any two distinct functions in the set are orthogonal to each other over a specified interval, meaning their inner product is zero. In atmospheric science, these functions are used to decompose complex signals or fields into simpler, independent components, such as in spectral methods for solving atmospheric equations. Fourier series and spherical harmonics are examples of orthogonal function sets.
