Biogenic ice nucleus

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003918

A microscopic particle of biological origin, such as bacteria, fungi, or pollen, that can initiate the formation of ice crystals in supercooled water droplets within clouds. These particles act as catalysts for heterogeneous ice nucleation at temperatures warmer than inorganic ice nuclei, influencing cloud microphysics and precipitation processes. Certain species of bacteria, like Pseudomonas syringae, are particularly effective biogenic ice nuclei.
