Brenner

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004030

A warm, dry, and often strong Föhn wind that descends from the Alps into the Brenner Pass region between Austria and Italy. This wind develops when moist air is forced to rise over the mountains, losing its moisture through precipitation on the windward side, and then warming adiabatically as it descends on the leeward side. It can cause rapid temperature increases and snowmelt in the valleys.
