Direct solar radiation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000715
Solar radiation that travels in a straight line from the sun to the Earth's surface without being scattered or absorbed by atmospheric constituents. This component of solar radiation casts sharp shadows and is a primary source of energy for heating the Earth's surface. Its intensity is measured by a pyrheliometer.
The component of solar radiation received by the earth's surface only from the direction of the sun's disk (i.e. it has not been reflected, refracted or scattered).
