Eddy covariance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005270

A direct micrometeorological method for measuring turbulent fluxes of scalars and momentum in the atmospheric boundary layer. It calculates the covariance between rapid fluctuations in vertical wind speed and the concentration or property of interest, such as temperature, water vapor, or carbon dioxide. This technique is widely used to quantify ecosystem-atmosphere exchange rates, with measurements often taken at 10 Hz or higher.
