Gravity wave drag parameterization

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006046

A method used in atmospheric models to represent the momentum transfer from the atmosphere to the Earth's surface or other atmospheric layers due to the breaking of gravity waves. These waves are generated by flow over topography or by convection and propagate vertically. The parameterization accounts for the drag exerted by these waves, which influences the large-scale atmospheric circulation.
