Wave drag

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010144

A form of atmospheric drag experienced by airflow over mountainous terrain, resulting from the generation of atmospheric gravity waves. As air flows over obstacles, it can create oscillations that propagate vertically and horizontally, transferring momentum from the mean flow. This process contributes to a reduction in the kinetic energy of the air mass, influencing global atmospheric circulation models.
