Describing a substance that readily attracts and absorbs moisture from the surrounding atmosphere. These materials have a strong affinity for water molecules, often leading to a change in their physical properties, such as mass or volume. Common hygroscopic substances in the atmosphere include certain aerosols and salts, which can act as cloud condensation nuclei.
