Hygroscopic

Describing a substance that readily attracts and holds water molecules from the surrounding atmosphere through either absorption or adsorption. Many drilling fluid additives, such as certain clays and polymers, exhibit hygroscopic properties, which can affect their performance and storage. Calcium chloride is a common hygroscopic salt used in some drilling fluid formulations.
