Hypsometric equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006390

A formula that relates the vertical thickness of an atmospheric layer to the mean virtual temperature within that layer. It is used to calculate the geometric height difference between two specific pressure levels. The equation demonstrates that the distance between two pressure surfaces is greater in warmer air and smaller in colder air, a principle used in creating atmospheric thickness charts.
