Inertial current
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006515
An ocean current that results from an initial impulse, such as a strong wind event, and then continues to flow primarily under the influence of the Coriolis force, with negligible pressure gradients or friction. These currents typically exhibit circular or elliptical paths, known as inertial oscillations, with a period equal to the local inertial period. The inertial period is 12 hours divided by the sine of the latitude.
