Infrared radiometry

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006545

The measurement of infrared radiation emitted or reflected by objects and surfaces. This technique is used in atmospheric science to determine temperatures, detect clouds, and analyze the composition of the atmosphere from a distance. Instruments for this purpose often operate in specific spectral bands, such as the 10-12 micrometer window for surface temperature.
