Latent heat

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001514

  1. The energy absorbed or released by a substance during a phase change, such as melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, or sublimation, without a change in temperature. This energy is stored within the molecular structure of the substance. In the atmosphere, the latent heat released during condensation of water vapor is a major energy source for storms and atmospheric circulation.

  2. Heat absorbed or released during a change of phase at constant temperature and pressure.
